He found Martina in the living room, and it seemed like she had taken drugs. He asked Martina where her mother was, and Martina said that Gerd was not home. The neighbor decided to investigate further, and found a horrifying scene when opening the door to the downstairs bathroom. Gerd was found with a rope around her neck, hanging from her shower. The police soon realized how similar Gerd’s and Annika’s apparent suicides were, and they soon realized that the person Annika mentioned in her diary must be Martina Kveldstad. Martina was interrogated but claimed to have nothing to do with the deaths of her mother and her friend. However, more and more evidence pointed to Martina killing both of them. After medical professionals looked at the crime scene photos and photos of the bodies, they realized that it seemed like neither Gerd nor Annika had killed themselves; it looked like it had been staged and that they had been strangled and then placed with ropes around their necks in the shower. Trial and aftermathShockingly, Martina Kveldstad was found not guilty of the murders of Gerd Kveldstad and Annika Toftgård. She was released, but the prosecution appealed and another trial was held. This time, Martina was found guilty of the murder of both her mother and her friend, and she was sentenced to life in prison. Martina Kveldstad is one of six women in Sweden that are sentenced to life in prison.Martina Kveldstad revealed her motive for killing her mother in 2019.
