preservearchives: Following the Geometry of Fire While working on routine cases for the National Personnel Records Center, staff of the St. Louis Preservation Department occasionally come across a record that has sustained an unusual burn pattern due to the 1973 fire. In this particular case, the fire gradually burned away the layers of the record, leaving a unique step-like appearance. The burned edges of each page are very brittle and will break off at the slightest touch. It is up to the technician to peel away each layer, gently clean the paper, and finally place individual pages in a polyester sleeve. The sleeve will protect the burned edges from further damage while still allowing the document to be handled and copied. It is unfortunate the records were burned in this way, but they are not unsalvageable. With a little skill and a lot of patience, information from this record can be recovered and preserved for the future. -- source link
