Hand-colored photo, 1905, Japan. “Daruma Dolls are hollow, round dolls traditionally made of toso (a papier mache like substance), which represent the Bodidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. Daruma Dolls are considered to be a symbol of perseverance and good luck, as they are weighted at the bottom so that they will always bounce back if they are knocked down. Often purchased as a New Year’s gift, they are made with blank eyes and the recipient of the doll fills in one eye when they set a goal and the other eye when they achieve it.” Text and image via Blue Ruin 1 of Flickr -- source link
