Optical Illusion? This image was taken with DigitalGlobe satellites on April 22, 2013 of the Colorado River in Utah. The image has been ‘positioned’ to give an interesting optical illusion – the river seems to be flowing at the top of a large mountain chain! Rotating the image by 180 degrees provides a more familiar viewpoint – the river actually rests in a valley, as expected. Optical illusions, like this awesome photo by National Geographic (it’s in their top 50 ever photograph gallery): http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/wallpaper/ngm/50-best/camels-aerial-johns/ do have an important point to make. Perspective of the observer (or the wavelength which which they are viewing) can make a huge difference to the perceived attributes of a target. For example, astronomers need to ensure that their theories apply equally to galaxies that we can see side, and face-on.-CJImage: DigitalGlobeFurther Reading:http://www.digitalglobe.com/ -- source link
