viohra: vittyyluvscookies: viohra: rvexillology: Mississippi’s New (hopefully temporary) Flag being Hung in the Capitol Subway from /r/vexillology Top comment: If they keep it, it looks like Mississippi will have joined the bed sheet club. [My interpretation](https://i.imgur.com/zbdrQEg.png) if they went full bed sheet instead of retaining sideways France. [Source](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Mississippi#Bicentennial_flag) of the Mississippi Bicentennial flag they’re using above. It’s fucking ugly. Better than the original, yeah, but ugly nonetheless American state flags are some of the ass ugliest flags in existence. There are a few that are really good — Maryland is a prime example — but like 90% of state flags have writing and/or seals/emblems— THOSE DONT BELONG ON FLAGS. Are there flag rules out there dictating what can or cannot be on a flag lol (in terms of writing/seals) Not rules per se more like… aesthetic agreement? A flag is supposed to be a visual symbol representing an entity; in short it’s a simple design that is as much the entity as the entity itself. Because of this it’s very tacky to have complex seals and/or words because the whole point of the flag is to represent those ideas simply and non-verbally. Seals are similar but they represent the entity in a complex way that can denote culture and history and thus are free to have lettering. Simple seals, if culturally important, are appropriate for flags (re: the Balkans). Take the Maryland flag: It’s unique, has good colourwork, and succinctly represents the state. Now the Californian flag: It does the same (albeit I’m not a fan of the design as a whole but whatever) but the words ”California Republic” are there for no reason; it’s repetitive and unneeded— the flag design already tells you it’s California without the words. Looks like a damn t-shirt logo. Indiana is another good flag if they only just took off the ”indiana” from it. It’s like as if Italy had ”ITALIA” written across it. Like cool we already fuckn knew it was Italy without the words. There’s only 2 flags I excuse and they are, in all irony of what I think about the nations, KSA and Iran. KSA has the shahada in white calligraphy with a sword beneath and over a green background and it’s simplicity and cultural meaning works to it’s advantage The Iranian flag in my opinion is actually the best use of lettering for a flag in the world The centre design is actually an overlapped calligraphy of the shahada and the border is kufi script of ”God is Great” but upon first glance it just looks like a cool design. -- source link
