August 2015 - Making the most of the tree limbing refuse So the guys who butchered the trees left a giant freaking mess everywhere. We acquired a smaller, more agile blade for V’s chainsaw, and he’s been able to cut things into more manageable pieces, and then we’ve been dragging them around. One of long term plans for the land is to put in switchbacks for paths, and between the branches and the mulch, we’re able to do so. It just takes a lot of time and energy dragging things around. The plants near V in the top photo are wild Joe Pye Weed, you can see them in the distance in the second photo. I usually refer to this whole section as the “Lower Hill”. Interestingly, the mix of native plants is a bit different this year. Less Bearpaw / Polymnia uvedalia, more Joe Pye Weed, and a new one to us, Elephant’s Foot or Elephantopus carolinianus. We have it in both the usual white, and a beautiful shade of purple. I’ll try to remember to get photos of it to share. -- source link
