In Malaysia, researchers using Lidar (combination of light and radar) imaging technology, uncovered this enormous tree. The tree, a yellow meranti tree (Shorea faguetiana), to be specific, is thought to be the tallest tree in the tropics. Extending 89.5 metres above the forest floor, it is nearly as tall as London’s ‘Big Ben’ (Westminster Tower, 96m). The height was confirmed following a climb by Unding Jami, a research assistant with the Stability of Altered Forest Ecosystems (SAFE) project. The yellow meranti is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This species may also sound familiar to any Minecraft players out there where it can be spawned as a yellow meranti sapling.-Jean Left image: Courtesy of Boris BongalovRight image: Courtesy of the University of Cambridge https://www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/minecraft-tree-probably-the-tallest-tree-in-the-tropics -- source link
