Feminism campaign inspires Afghan men to stand up for women“Emma Watson, U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador, launched HeForShe in September 2014, and since then, the campaign has gained a huge amount of traction in the feminist world. The campaign has taken action not only in America and England, but in other countries around the world as well. The HeForShe campaign has been implemented in Afghanistan, but because of the Taliban and the country’s history surrounding women’s rights, it may take a while for the campaign to truly make an impact. While the Taliban focused on cracking down on women’s rights during its five-year rule that ended in 2001, the aftermath of the rule still influences the daily lives of women in the country. In mid-June, to kick off the U.N. campaign’s launch in Afghanistan, a group met at a high school in Kabul to demonstrate the role that men play in the world of women’s rights. Local activists, government officials, and foreign dignitaries all played a role in the campaign launch, striving to make a change in the country. Activists shared stories on stage and used the slogan "A brave man stands for women" to catch the attention of everyone at the launch. 250 people attended the event in Kabul, Afghanistan, but the campaign has an even larger goal of acquiring signatures from 3,000 Afghan men and boys pledging to stand up for women’s rights on the “He for She” website. As an even broader goal, the campaign wants to acquire 1 billion total signatures from men and boys worldwide by this upcoming September.Ultimately, the end goal of implementing the HeForShe campaign in a country like Afghanistan is to raise awareness and convey the message that gender equality cannot be truly achieved until men change the way they view women on a global scale.”Read the full piece and watch the video here -- source link
