Three months ago, I shared a sneak peek of this beautiful drum from Rumpu Ukko. It has been a wild experience! Most of the time, I take a month or so to get to know a new tool and to be able to make it mine. But this drum was asking for more: it was asking me to slow down, to ground deeper, to close my eyes and listen for longer - and I think this process of working with it is worth sharing, as it sheds light on its nature and its powerful energy.Frame drums are part of many different cultures with radically different roots, but yet, something about the reverberating sound of them has been deemed ritualistic (and even sacred) for many of them. In this case, this drum comes from Finland, where its makers where born and raised in the Finnish traditions and customs. They create these drums not only because they are part of their cultural background, but also because they believe in their benefits: a 2014 study published in theJournal of cardiovascular medicine studied a group of people playing drums for 40 minutes. To make it short, the results were that stress and anxiety levels were lower for all of the participants, and systolic blood pressure decreased in those of more age.In this case, you’re seeing a medium sized drum (diameter 41 cm). Size affects the sound they produce, so if you’re interested take this into account! Every drum is unique, so though you won’t find this particular one at the site, there are many beautiful colour combinations to choose from. The frame is made from double layered birch plywood, which has been waxed with a wood wax. The skin is Finnish reindeer hide (as traditionally made), which is coloured with a water stain. The wooden handle is round shaped for comfort, and the cords are made with jute and hemp. Each drum comes with a felted drumstick made of natural elements (I love the soft branch stick), so this drum in general is great to come in contact with nature. It also comes with care instructions, as tools need maintenance.You can never play a drum wrong. The freedom that drums offer is probably why they have been so attractive for centuries.
