margaretroses:22 January 1901 - The death of Queen Victoria. Born Alexandrina Victoria on 24 May 1819 in Kensington Palace, London. On 20 June 1837, at the age of 18, she became Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and in 1876, Empress of India. Victoria gave her name to an era that spanned most of the 19th century and oversaw great changes and advancements in British industry, culture, politics, science and medicine, as well as the expansion of the British Empire. She is the second longest reigning British monarch, at 63 years and seven months, surpassed by her great-great-granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2015. Queen Victoria died at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, at the age of 81, and was buried in the Frogmore Royal Mausoleum at Windsor, beside her beloved husband, Prince Albert. Above the Mausoleum door are inscribed Victoria’s words: ‘Farewell best beloved, here at last I shall rest with thee, with thee in Christ I shall rise again’. -- source link
