This gravestone for Edith Chapman is a great example of Henry Emmes’ work in Newport. Dated 1759, I believe it influenced carvers like John Stevens III to try their hand at portraiture. Moreover, it reminds me that no matter how many times I look at stones they reward me with new information. For instance, I did not notice until today that this child’s tombstone (3yrs. old) includes the rather straightforward truth “Youth Die" inscribed upon it. I pause. Zoom in. Yes it says "Youth Die.” Quite informative. -- source link
