Creepy Christmas Companions: Pere FouettardIn areas of France and southern Belgium, a companion known as Pere Fouettard (AKA Father Whipper), accompanies St. Nicholas during St. Nicholas Day. His job is to give lumps of coal or floggings to children who have misbehaved. Legend has it that Le Pere Fouettard was an innkeeper (or butcher). He captured three boys , drugged them, slit their throats, cut them into pieces, and made them into a stew. St. Nicholas discovered the children and resurrected them. After his discovery, Le Pere Fouettard repented and became St. Nicholas’s companion. Le Pere Fouettard is most often described as a male with an evil looking face. He wears long, dark robes, and has wild hair and a long bear. Pere Fouettard carries either a whip, a large stick, or bundles of switches. Some descriptions state that he has a wicker basket in order to carry away children. -- source link
