syngoniums:plantyhamchuk:syngoniums:Sometimes I forget about the plants that are only really visible looking into the patio. I water them, sure, but when they do things I often miss them. Today they look grosser than usual because they cut the grass yesterday and they get coated in clippings. Anyway, here’s ripe cotton bolls and Abelmoschus moschatus (pink-flowering variant). The seeds of the latter have a sweet musky scent that has led to their use as substitute for animal-derived musks in perfumery. My cacti ARE visible from the inside, but they seldom require or demand my attention, so I don’t focus on them much outside the flowering season. Melocactus matanzanus blooms pretty much constantly in the warm months, but its flowers are tiny - you can just see the pink buds poking out of the red cephalium here. The flowers are followed by bubblegum pink fruits. How’s your experience been growing cotton? It seems like a fun plant to grow.It was surprisingly easy (which is good, considering how neglectful I’ve been.) My plants are artificially dwarfed by their pot size and lack of full sun, but even with that they readily bloomed and set seed. They want a fair amount of water, and they were getting water with dilute hibiscus fertilizer in them (17-5-24). Spider mites love them, but that’s par for the course with Malvaceae. This is a red-leaved variety that would probably be quite stunning as a ornamental annual if given proper room and light. The flowers are gorgeous, and the bolls are visually interesting (though they WILL blow everywhere if you don’t pick them in time). I’m considering trying one of the colored fiber varieties next spring.Awesome, thanks so much for the info! -- source link
