SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORM OVER MONTANA Although the shape of this cloud looks somewhat like a spaceship, it is in fact a thunderstorm cloud called a supercell. Storm systems like these centre on mesocyclones, which are rotating updrafts that can cover an area of several kilometres. They can also pour down torrential rain and high winds including tornadoes.Around the edge of the supercell are jagged-looking clouds and dust swept up by the wind dominates the centre. A lonely tree can be seen near the centre of the storm. The supercell pictured was captured west of Glasgow, Montana, USA, in July 2010; it caused minor damage and lasted several hours.-TELhttp://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap101130.htmlCredit & Copyright: Sean R.
