strangeharpy:castielsteenwolf:ateenwitch:I think people need to know about this. Things like this happen every single day in America.no like get this in your heads, people DIE because they simply cant AFFORD to live, there are people DYING because they cant PAY for treatment. EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. WE LET PEOPLE DIE BECAUSE THEY CANT AFFORD CARE. So the first job I had where I was making enough money to live on ($10/hr doing crummy call center work), we had this insanely long training class that was nine weeks long. One of the women who got hired the same time I did was ecstatic because after three months, we all would qualify for some reasonably decent health insurance coverage. She was diabetic and had been out of work for the past year or two, and couldn’t afford any of her medication. The second week of training, right after lunch, she literally dropped dead in the middle of class. Just fell out of her chair dead. Because she hadn’t been able to afford her medication. When she finally got a shitty-ass job that was benevolent enough to provide health insurance after three months. Now, I’m not saying that folks who worth in the healthcare industry should work for free or anything like that. God knows there are so many healthcare workers who are getting the shit end of the stick (nurses, I’m looking at you), and it takes a lot of schooling and expertise to be in that line of work. But I want you to look me in the eye when you tell me that healthcare should be a for-profit industry. So that I can see exactly how shocked you are when I punch you in the fucking throat.Diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Diabetic patients will come in with crazy shit stuck to the underside of their feet, because through chronic lack of insulin / inability to manage their disease they’ve lost sensation. So they’ll step on something, something will get wedged in there, infection will set in, and they’ll have no idea. If you know any diabetics, encourage them to do nightly foot checks. You might save them an amputation. -- source link
