Painting on the Welcoming Banquet at Bubyeongnu Pavilion, Kim Hongdo(傳 金弘道, 1745-1816?), Joseon Dynasty. This work, which depicts a banquet welcoming the newly appointed governor of Pyeongan-do Province, consists of three paintings: Yeongwangjeong yeonhoedo (練光亭宴會圖), which shows a banquet at Yeongwangjeong Pavilion; Bubyeongnu yeonhoedo (浮碧樓宴會圖), which shows a second banquet at Bubyeongnu Pavillion; and Worya seonnyudo (月夜船遊圖), which shows a procession of boats under the moonlight. The first two paintings depict daytime events that take place within the fortress, backgrounded by the Daedong River, while the last painting depicts nighttime activities on the Daedong River, a scene perhaps akin to a modern-day fireworks festival on the river. On the upper right side of the second painting, a signature can be seen: Danwonsa (檀園寫, literally “painted by Danwon”). Danwon is the pen name of the renowned painter Kim Hong-do, and this work bears his characteristic style of depicting people, as well as his favored parallel-diagonal composition. These three panorama paintings are masterful documents of these events, filled with extraordinary intricate details: the sprawling crowd at the Daedong riverside, the meticulously depicted buildings and fortress, the dazzling gilt and splendid colors of the flags, and the myriad of individual features of the people attending the banquet, from the torchbearers to the ordinary onlookers. - National Museum of Korea -- source link
