Dersu Uzala (1975).The Russian army sends an explorer on an expedition to the snowy Siberian wilderness where he makes friends with a seasoned local hunter.It’s not exactly new information that Akira Kurosawa is a master filmmaker. That said, he’s better known for films like Seven Samurai, Rashomon and Yojimbo, all deserving films, but man, if this one isn’t great too. It’s exquisitely shot, with rich and weighted performances and a lovely script. It’s a story about companionship and connection more than anything, and it really succeeds overall as a film.
