destinationtoast:mage-cat:destinationtoast:Toastystats: Crossovers, fusions, and crossover pairings on AO3It’s my last fandom stats of 2020! The awesome @emergentomens won my stats in the FTH auction toward the beginning of the year (eons ago), and they gave me the fantastically fun prompt to look into crossovers on AO3. I am now scooting in just under the 2020 wire with a whole bunch of breakdowns of common crossovers and fusions, as well as a few case studies of interesting crossovers in different fandoms (e.g. His Dark Materials, Good Omens, Untitled Goose Game). Also crossover pairings, a look at animated crossovers, and more. Happy New Year, @emergentomens !! I’m really proud of some of the stuff I was able to uncover about quirky, fanon-dependent crossovers and unexpected crossover pairings. Go check it out on AO3! Also, big thanks on this one to all my readers who chipped in helpful info about various crossovers that were confusing me, and other related questions. I included a whole supplemental doc full of your useful insights at the end of this analysis! It is strange, so many years later, to see echos of Rise of the Brave, Tangled, Frozen Dragons. For those who don’t remember, around 2012, a section of the animation fandom noted that Rise of the Guardians, Brave, Tangled, and How to Train Your Dragon all had very compatible art styles and started producing art and fic crossing them over, including the usual amount of shipping. When Frozen came out in 2013, it was added to the mix.And that is part of why Hiccup/Jack Frost is the most common crossover ship in the sample. Presumably, it’s the most common of the pairings from this mashup fandom because, if you wanted to write m/f or f/f ships, you had several options, but if you wanted to write m/m there was only Hiccup and Jack, so the pairing got more concentrated attention. Ooh, thanks so much for these comments! I was hoping someone more familiar with that crossover would chip in and give more context. It’s really interesting to hear about! -- source link
