Izanagi went to rescue her from Yomi (the underworld), but while she lay sleeping one night, he used his hair as a torch to see her. Horrified at her appearance Izanagi fled in terror, but Izanami awoke indignantly and chased after him. Once out of the caverns entrance, Izanagi sealed it with a boulder. Izanami threatened to kill one thousand people a day if he left her, he replied he’d give life to one thousand five hundred. -- source link
