This set of photos was taken overlooking part of the Vredefort dome in South Africa. Although part of it has been removed by later geologic processes, Vredefort is the largest certain impact crater on Earth. It was formed about 2 billion years ago when an asteroid slammed into the ancient continent that is today South Africa; the crater is nearly 2x the diameter of the more recent Chicxululb crater that caused the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs at the K-Pg boundary. These hills and surrounding topography are part of the structure created by that impact, and many of the rocks at this site were formed or shocked in that impact. The final photo in this sequence shows part of the Vredefort Granophyre - rocks that were brecciated and partially melted by the energy of the impact. These photos were sent to us by a reader from that area. -JBB -- source link
