The Principle of Virtual Work. The picture above is an example using the principle of virtual work to find the deflection of a point on a structure due to both support settlement and elastic deformation of the structure. The principle of virtual work is a powerful technique in solid mechanics which uses energy and work as a tool for finding deflections and forces. The fundamental concept of the theory is that when a structure is loaded, strain energy is stored in it just like when you hold a spring in place it has energy stored in it waiting to be released. For beams and frames strain energy is caused essentially entirely by the internal moment of the infinitesimal element as it rotates an infinitesimal amount. By the conservation of energy, the internal strain energy stored in the structure must be equal to the external work done on the structure by a system of forces as it deforms and deflects. The virtual work method uses this concept by applying virtual load on the structure where the deflection amount is desired in combination with the real loading. the contribution of the virtual load causes a virtual work that must be equal to the virtual strain energy stored in the structure. -- source link
