uesp: uesp: Did You Know: It is a fatal mistake to pursue a fleeing Maormer ship? As Maormer ships are faster than the vessels in any other fleet, it is usually impossible to successfully catch them. As Maormer ships are self-sufficient, they will often use this tactic to lure ships into open ocean, where they will slowly starve out the enemy crew at their leisure. Likewise, you should never flee from an attacking Maormer ship unless you are in sight of land, as you cannot outrun them. While the book does not specify, if I had to guess, it’s because of reef vipers and sea serpents. The Maormer call upon their long friends:And request they get them fish. The sea serpents and rift vipers then get them the fish because it’s really no problem at all for them. Look at how long he is. Fish fear him. As the sea serpents and rift vipers are Maormer war beasts, I would say this counts as self sufficiency, although if you disagree with that just ignore that and understand that Maormer do not need to return to port to resupply instead. Keep in mind this is just a theory of how the Maormer can maintain combat effectiveness while at sea indefinitely, I am unaware of an official explanation. So you pursue after them, and they lead you to open ocean. Your supplies start to run low, so you turn back. Suddenly, the Maormer turn around, because they were never retreating, they were luring you into a position where they have the greatest advantage. In fact, while this book does not mention it, they were most likely taking you towards a position where they knew allied ships were waiting. This is known as a “feigned retreat”, and is a good enough tactic in our own world to get mentioned in Sun Tzu’s The Art of War.Now that you are where they want you, they will harry your own (real) attempt to retreat. The goal for them now is to just wait you out. You will eventually be so tired and hungry that they can take your ship without a fight. Beyond that, an actual engagement is still very good for them at this point if you manage to force them into one. They have ballistae. Their fighters are unsurprisingly well experienced with naval boarding actions. Those sea serpents and reef vipers we mentioned before will help them take down your ship. But let’s say you are a surprisingly tough crew that manages to survive all of that. The Maormer still have one more trick up their sleeves, weather magic. You may have been able to defeat all of their other means of taking you down, but you’re not going to be able to defeat a hurricane. So, don’t pursue retreating Maormer. That’s exactly what they want you to do. Maormer might be one of my new favourite TES races“You’re not going to be able to defeat a hurricane”: confirmed, the only way to defeat Maormer is getting giant robots Pacific Rim style, @dubidadei -- source link
