camilliar:beaniebaneenie:61below:I have a theory that Jack did not in fact bail on the press conference, I think that the Bittles are calling their son after they saw the presser.Nuh-uh, no dice. Jack already *did* bail on the press conference. George tells the team that she had to move it from after the game until 8am. Think about it. Have you ever seen any hockey game where you heard squat from the team until the next day? Especially a Stanley Cup winning team? No. Not having a press conference immediately after the game would have looked extremely suspect, and George explicitly states that the reason that didn’t happen is because of Jack. George looks angry, exhausted, and genuinely upset that the kid she stuck her neck out for (remember, Ngozi has stated that a bunch of other agents and teams were wondering if Jack was going to be worth the trouble of signing, or paying for, if “Samwell and America really cured him”, but George believed in him) is flaking on her like this. Keep in mind too, that the entire team now has to be awake at 6am… Awake and cogent enough to speak to the press. They’ve all probably been at their own Stanley parties the night before, which they may have had to cut short, or intentionally not drink as much, knowing that they now have an early morning press conference. Because their star player was nowhere to be found last night. (I can’t imagine that every member of the team is thrilled about this.)While I agree: Jack kissing his boyfriend after winning the Cup should not be a big deal, the fact of the world they live in (and our world too) is that it IS a big deal. And as someone who was raised by a movie star and a hockey legend, Jack is intimately aware of the press. And after his OD, he is intimately aware that if the press doesn’t have a story, they will make one up. And it will probably be ten times worse than the real story. George says that the Falcs PR team has been planning for contingencies… Likely if Jack had gotten outed against his will, or possibly a quiet coming out photo deep in the middle of the off-season. But as far as PR is concerned, “contingency” is almost exclusively used to refer to “a story we didn’t want to be a story, but someone found out and now it’s a Thing™” stories. The Falcs may have been prepared for an unintentional outing, but they were not prepared for this, and as someone who grew up with the press on his doorstep, Jack has no excuse for not expecting it. Bitty is constantly referred to as a social media guru… He has no excuse either. Both of them bailed on at least one press conference, if not two. And Jack has apparently been unreachable all night. Whatever else is happening, however friendly they are, George is Jack’s boss. It is part of her job to protect him, and the team, and he is not letting her do that. If his boss is trying to reach him, he should be answering. Especially after such a monumental event. (After so many storylines in the comic about coming out, talking to his father about the risks, talking to the team, keeping everything secret from even SMH for fear that someone might slip up… Jack cannot use the excuse that he didn’t know this was going to be a big deal)This isn’t even thouching on the fact that the Falcs’ Cup Win will now forever be tied to this kiss… That he took what should have been a *team* triumph and celebration, and made it all about him. Yes, he has as much right to kiss his SO as anyone. But he knew what the media would do. He even says “we can’t” the first time Bitty asks to kiss him. (And the fact that Bitty keeps asking and coercing is a whole ‘nother post though. Come on, Bitty. No means no, to everything. Forever and always. Also, if you haven’t told your boyfriend that the reason you’re kissing him on live national tv is because “I don’t want to call my mother and have a confrontation about it” instead of the “let’s take on the world together” like he thinks? You have a whole different set of problems.)The fact that Jack - who we’ve seen completely crumble when ESPN talks shit about him, we’ve seen lose his cool and snap at Bitty when Bitty is the star and center of attention (the “lucky shot”), his anger at Kent showing up again at Samwell, where Jack is the star, Jack immaturely continuing to take every Falcs loss *personally* as though he is carrying the team and they win or lose based on his level of play alone - kind of cements my theory: Jack Zimmermann doesn’t hate the press. He hates negative press. I’m going to reblog this, because I think it contains some really interesting meta about Jack’s character, and I’m also going to highlight some of the blog post for 3.25-26:✓WHERE ARE JACK AND BITT– We’ll find out in Year Four! Sheesh! Hold every horse!✓And uh, how is Georgia dealing with all of this? GM is…stressed. Her prized forward is no where to be found and all she knows is that half of her team went crazy in a Providence condo. There was a giant inflatable duck? WHERE’S Jack Zimmermann! ✓Fine. But one more time….Where are Jack and Bitty? You’ll find out in March! This is … quite a lot of reinforcement, like, pushing the reader to really notice that Jack and Bitty are missing, and that they’re missing for a significant reason that deserves further investigation. This is Ngozi subtly telling the reader to spend between now and March wondering where Jack and Bitty are.If it turns out that where Jack and Bitty are is “off-screen but nearby doing nothing unexpected” or “at the press conference, but they got there late” that’s kind of bad storytelling at best, intentional authorial misdirection at worst. To be fair, I posted this before the notes came out, so… I’m probably being jossed again! But I also think that the difference in the timestamps is 1) a lot of hours and 2) important enough a detail to be included. We’ll see? -- source link
