The Breaking of Waves Similar to how a storm front rolls into North America’s Great Plains, the crashing of a wave can be rather daunting and extreme in appearance. What looks like utter chaos, is in fact fairly technical and balanced. Granted some ‘chaos’ is involved in the formula, meaning that there are external factors that do influence the crashing of waves, the general science behind how they act in nature is more or less the same and consistent. By definition, an ocean wave breaks when its amplitude reaches a critical level and consequently a significant amount of its energy can be turned its turbulent kinetic energy. In the provided photograph, we can witness what the crashing of a wave looks like from a fisheye’s view. I would assume that from little Nemo’s perspective this is all as normal as the blue sky is to a soaring bird, but to us “land-goers” the vision of crashing waves from underwater is something out of this world and chaotically beautiful. –Pete D Photo Credit: Troy Casswellhttp://elementsimaging.com.au/ References: 1. http://www.sciencedaily.com/articles/b/breaking_wave.htm 2. http://www.oceanbrake.com/wavescience.html -- source link
