World’s Largest Marlin to get a Safe Home234,291 sq. km (slightly less that the size of UK) of the Atlantic Ocean surrounding the Ascension Islands have been formally designated as a marine reserve by the government of the United Kingdom. This implies over half this protected area will be closed to fishing, and the remaining half will be closely monitored by patrol boats and satellites from 2017. The main objective is to police tuna fishery and to conduct scientific research to finalize the ultimate boundaries of the marine reserve. This new marine reserve increases conservation zones in the ocean which sums to about 2% of the entire oceans. The remote Ascension Islands are home to the several fish species such as the world’s largest marlin, the largest population of green turtles, along with big colonies of sea birds and the frigate bird which is unique to the islands. The newly designated marine reserve includes inshore areas and seamounts which attract aggregations of vulnerable species such as sharks. This reserve will now help preserve species and expand fish stocks. Charles Darwin visited the islands in the 19th century and ever since these islands have been at the frontiers of science. It is appropriate that it is now at the center of scientific effort to design the largest marine reserve in the Atlantic Ocean.NateImage Source: Ken Neill, NOAA. http://1.usa.gov/1TX9MgLSource:http://bit.ly/1RdlPsl -- source link
