edwardslovelyelizabeth:Grand Duchess Catherine Pavlovna of Russia (1788-1819), Queen of Württemberg. Found in the collection of Landesmuseum Württemberg.Grand Duchess Catherine Pavlovna of Russia was the fourth daughter of Tsar Paul I of Russia and Princess Sophie Dorothea of Württemberg, sister of Tsar Alexander I of Russia and Nicholas I of Russia. In 1808 Napoleon during the celebrated meeting at Erfurt via Talleyrand asked Alexander I for the possibility to marry Grand Princess Catherine Pavlovna (after his divorce with Josephine takes place), Alexander diplomatically evaded a positive answer, saying: “I should have no objections, but I can not dispose of my sister’s hand without my mother consent”. As to Catherine Pavlovna, when she first learned the news, she claimed: “I would rather marry a simple Russian heater than accept the hand of this Corsican”. Immediately after Alexander’s return from Erfurt, she was engaged with German Prince of Oldenburg. -- source link
