opossummypossum:leigh-of-oldstones:edwadrules2:opossummypossum:“Opossums are ugly” Excuse youMy beautiful sonThey aren’t ugly! And their fur is so, so soft. I had a friend years ago who rescued possums that were injured or orphaned. I had to take care of them for a few days when she went out of town. They are dead to the world during the day time (or should be; if you see a possum in the wild during the day time, it’s probably sick), and can be litterbox trained. AND AND one of the ladies I work with rescues baby possums. Sometimes she will sneak them into work. One day I saw her and I whispered, “Hey… I hear you sometimes bring possums to work.” And she “YES WANT TO SEE ONE???” And she reached into her shirt and pulled a tiny little furry baby possum out of her BRA. It was the cutest little thing ever! So soft and with a little tiny nose and bright little beady eyes. When I had a house there were a couple of baby possums that were always climbing up on the deck rail at night, and I had to pluck them off and put them high up on our fence so my dog wouldn’t get them. They aren’t at all aggressive, in my experience. They also are NOT vectors for a lot of common wildlife diseases like rabies, either because their physiology is so primitive or because their body temperature is too low for a lot of viruses to thrive. I’ve heard mixed things on that. I have also observed what looked like dead baby possums that my dog was sniffing at. The first time it happened I was so upset. I put my dog inside and came out to bury the poor thing and it was NO WHERE IN SIGHT. So I had a new understanding of the expression “playing possum.” (aka playing dead) It’s very convincing.Sorry for the long post… I just get really enthusiastic about some things. :Dit’s because of their low body temperature! thank you for this comment! -- source link
