bachaoambassadors:On 21st February, 1952, in what would later become the country of Bangladesh, students in Dhaka gathered in protest against Pakistan’s edict that Urdu be the sole language spoken. The police opened fire on the students, killing several, but they persevered. Now, the Shaheed Minar (Martyr Monument, pictured above) stands in commemoration, and Bangladesh celebrates Ekushey February, (21st February) as the anniversary of the Bengali Language Movement. In 1999, UNESCO declared 21st February International Mother Language Day in honor of Bangladesh. -- source link
