clynester:British soldiers landing at Sword Beach. The chap in the foreground is Bill Millin, a Royal Marines Commando and personal piper to Lord Lovat, who is famous for being the only man to wear a kilt during the landing and the only man to play the pipes during the landing, his only weapon a sgian dubh (a traditional Scots knife tucked into his right sock). After the beach was secured, Millin was able to speak to German snipers who had been taken prisoner of war. When he asked them why they hadn’t shot him (he had spent the whole landing marching up and down the beach playing the pipes and hadn’t received a scratch), the Germans said they thought that Milllin was a madman.Bill Millin survived the war and went on to live until his death in August 2010. -- source link
