1979-1990 Anime PrimerRumic World: Fire Tripper, Laughing Target & Maris the Chojo (1985-1987)While most famous for her long-running series, manga artist Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma ½, Urusei Yatsura) is also quite adept at writing one-shots. Between 1985 and 1987, Studio Pierrot adapted three of her one-off stories into a series collectively known as Rumic World. Fire Tripper follows Suzuko, a schoolgirl who finds herself transported to feudal Japan after being caught in a gas explosion. There, she befriends the gruff warrior Shukumaru who helps her search for the young neighbor she believes slipped back in time with her. Many story elements first introduced in Fire Tripper would go on to be reused in Takahashi’s later work, Inuyasha. In Laughing Target, a young man named Yuzuru finds himself in a pinch when his childhood fiancée (and first cousin) Azusa comes to live with him after the death of her mother… much to his girlfriend Satomi’s chagrin. If this sounds like the set-up of a romantic comedy, rest assured it is not. The beautiful and eerie Azusa is possessed by dark forces, ones that will destroy any obstacle in her path. And now that her mother is gone, her biggest roadblock is Satomi…The titular Maris of Maris the Chojo is a perpetually poor and down-on-her-luck space police woman who hopes to set her life straight by finding (and romancing) the kidnapped son of a billionaire. Will her out-of-control super strength and dark past as a professional wrestler actually work to her advantage for once? Familiar cameos and wacky hijinks abound in this off-beat sci-fi comedy.Rumic World shares much of the same staff that was in involved in Urusei Yatsura, an earlier Takahashi adaption. Their familiarity with her style allows them to expand on the original stories in a way that feels natural and fun. These OVAs are an entertaining watch for both fans of Takahashi’s work and those new to her. -- source link
