18/11/20Pictured: Untersuchungen zum den Kertcher Vasen by Karl Schefold. This is one of the central texts I’m working off for my diss, and I’m really surprised at how grimy this cover is because basically no one has published anything extensive on 4th century Attic red-figure since this came out in 1934 (hence my diss) so it’s not like this has been heavily referenced. Someone was not properly handling this book–look at those fingerprints. Hump day, baby :) I spent a solid 5 hours today working on this one section of my proposal where I am proposing a different system of categorization of vases than has been used in scholarship until now, focusing on grades of production rather than stylistic differentiations which really quickly slide into the projection of modern aesthetic opinions onto the vases, which is not gr8. It was really slow work; it’s way further along than it was, but nothing came easily, that’s for sure. My brain hurts from how hard I made it think today.I still have a little left in me, though, so I’m going to try and run with it and write some recapitulative stuff before I call it a night. I’m grooving to Maggie Rogers, Macy is snoring next to me, and I’ve got a pint of water at the ready, so I’m good to go. -- source link
