Mugshot Monday - “Nostalgic 35mm Film Camera mug” by Deids Clay with Snowshoe Seasonal Blend by Peace CoffeeMy first camera was a Pentax Spotmatic 35mm SLR camera with a screw mount lens.Actually, it was my dad’s camera. He taught me how to use the camera and he showed me how to bulk-load TMAX 400 black and white film into rolls and make prints in our darkroom. He gave me the Pentax camera when he upgraded to an autofocus 35mm camera. As a little kid, I can remember being mesmerized watching him make the prints. The photographs appeared like magic in the developer.Don’t get me wrong, I have no desire to start shooting 35mm film again. Nope! I love using my iPhone to take photos. It’s soooooo nice to SEE if I got the shot BEFORE I develop the roll of film! But I did enjoy that time in my life when making photographs was a more laborious process. That’s what you had to do if you wanted to make custom photos back in the day. It was a fun hobby.Turns out this camera shape is nostalgic for Deidra Roat of Deids Clay as well. She minored in photography in college and used a 35mm SLR camera, too. She’s a fantastic potter now and incorporated the camera memory inot a rad illustration. I love how she carved the illustration into the mug – it feels good when I hold the mug with both hands. And look at that handle! I couldn’t figure out how she mad that. She rolls out clay into a slab and presses a flat sheet of metal with little holes to make that texture. Then she rolls it up into that handle! It feels gooooood. Thanks for making this mug, Deidra! It was nice to sit this morning with my new mug and sip some good coffee while thinking of my old Pentax camera. Cheers!
