Guido Reni(1575–1642) ~ L'Aurora~ c. 1612-1614,frescoCasino dell’Aurora, Palazzo Rospigliosi Pallavicini (Rome)~~~~<>~~~~DuringGuido Reni’s second stay in Rome he directly tackled themes from classicalAntiquity. While this composition was openly derived from classical art, it wasmeant in the spirit of purest love and has a genuine if rather insipid beauty.Though aceiling decoration, it is composed in the form of a frieze as if painted on awall. Here the artist was rebelling against the spatial researches which atthat time were exciting such passionate interest in Lanfranco and Pietro daCortona.~~<><><><>~~Its ceilingfresco is displayed within a painted frame or quadro riportato and depicts from right to left, Aurora (Dawn) in agolden billowing dress with her garlands flies over a dim-lit landscape, leading a blond Apollo in his horse-drawn chariot, surrounded by a chain offemale “hours”, bringing light to the world. It could also bedescribed as the Triumph of Apollo ledby the Aurora. Above the quadriga, in the sky, flies the putto Phosphorus with a torch. Zephyrs blow winds at either end. -- source link
