lizziethereader: Weekly Bookish Question #253 (October 3rd - October 9th): How do you feel about non-translated foreign language sentences in books? (I don’t mean the odd “merci” or “ti amo”, but actual sentences or sometimes even short paragraphs). Whose job is it to translate? The author’s? The editor’s? The reader’s, if they happen to not speak those languages and want to understand? I definitely don’t think it’s the reader’s. I think it’s the author’s job to make, if not exactly what is being said, the main idea of what is being said from context. Though I don’t mind/even like a translation footnote in addition to that. -- source link
