“Le Circle de la Rue Royale” James Tissot, 1868, Oil on canvas. Musée d'Orsay. As a commission from the Circle of the Rue Royale, a male club founded in 1852, Tissot painted this twelve models in the latest fashion of the mid-19th century: from the classic all black frac to the marvelous prince of Wales fabric and the contrasting gilets. And of course without forgetting the man’s best friend in the 19th century: the top hat. Each sitter payed 1000 francs and after the painting was finished a special draw determined who would keep it. The sitters from left to right: Comte Alfred de la Tour-Maubourgh, marquis de Lau, Comte Etienne de Ganay, Comte J. de Rochechouart, M. C. Vansittard, Marquis R. de Miramon, Baron Hottinger, Marquis de Ganay, M. Gaston de Saint Maurice, Prince Edmond-Melchoir de Polignac, Marquis de Gallifet, Charles Haas. -- source link
