Why did Rumpelstiltskin pick Belle?He used to tell me that there are no coincidences. Everything that happens, happens by design, and there’s nothing we can do about it. Forces greater than us conspire to make it happen. Fate, destiny, whatever you want to call it. - BaelfirePerhaps someday we will know for certain in the canon but for now I am firmly of the opinion that he chose her on a whim and that she played no part in his vision of the curse. Fate plays a very big role in the series - as we found out in Manhattan - and Rumpel has been fate’s bitch since the moment he met that seer. Or possibly even before. Prophesy or the fates may have lent a hand in his father’s death as well since being the son of the coward is what propelled him to that battlefield in the first place.Rumpel may have visited the keep before the deal and been intrigued by Belle or at least realized what Sir Maurice valued most in life. Or he may have named the price in the moment. (So far as I know there is nothing in canon stating that he watched her or was particularly aware of her before he arrived.) But either way I see Belle as completely separate from the curse and everything he was doing to get it cast. Belle is another story. Not part of the Baelfire/Curse story. Not one of the pieces he needed to move across the board. She is fate walloping him upside the head. By the time he met her he knew who would cast the curse and had already spent decades preparing Regina for the task. By the time he met her I also think he knew ALL the ingredients he would need. ALL the players in the drama. And how it would need to play out. He knew of Snow White before Regina was conceived and clearly knew something of Snow’s relationship to Regina. I find it hard to believe that he did not know that she was the mother of the Savior as well. Rumpel knew Charming would be necessary long before Charming met Snow and prepared his way through the adoption and death of his brother. There was no need to create a True Love potion until the time was right. Until Regina had killed Leopold. Until Snow and Charming had met. Once they met everything moved into high gear and picked up speed, each movement leading into the next.This doesn’t mean he wasn’t trying anything else he could to get to the Land Without Magic. But he is fate’s bitch and nothing he tried could ever work - we’ve seen some of this in the flashbacks. Any bean slipped through his fingers. Magic slippers disappeared before he could get them. And anyone else he prepared to cast the curse (if he did), well, it never could work. Only Regina could cast it. Only Snow and Charming’s love could make the potion to fuel it.In sum, he chose Belle because he the Beast and she the Beauty and they were in Fairytale Land and that is the way it is supposed to be.
