modmad:here’s an old patreon reward to fill in the drawing-hiatus void a bit; something I get asked about a lot is the ‘acting’ in my comics and how to be subtle with conveying emotions. The answer is mostly experience and constantly observing people in real life to learn about expressions, but knowing when to ‘dial up’ or ‘dial down’ emotion is very important! context is king- this is basically the same advice that Carl Barks gave on one of his reference sheets here (in a much more succinct manner!):if I may as an added example;GOOD “I am shocked” expressions in a dramatic situationBAD “I am shocked” expressions in a dramatic situationI’ve actually wanted to deconstruct why the above expressions in “I Will Survive” don’t work in terms of cartoon empathy for a LONG time. Because before I knew ANYTHING about the comic, these two expressions just… bug me so much for how much they’re in the “wrong” end of the spectrum, making the entire situation we’re suppose to take seriously in context of the story unintentionally hilarious.I just always feel since it’s a fan-comic it’s not really my place to really dig into someone else’s work :/So… I’ll just leave it here as a rather strong example of “swung too hard in the wrong direction”(a pity too since the rest of the art in the comic isn’t half bad at all apart from one or two awkward spots. Better in other spots than I could do. Which makes the above expressions all the more frustrating)Also thank you Mod for the excellent resources as always <3 -- source link
