Portrait of a Muse (1759). Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder (German, 1722-1789). Oil on canvas.Tischbein depicts the muse, probably Terpsichore, the muse of dance and song. The lyre, lower right, is an attribute. Terpsichore entertains lovers by seduction through knowledge. She is believed to have invented dance and other fine arts before later inventing the sciences. Tischbein’s use of other attributes, such as the laurel wreath and writing utensil, reflect his more complex interpretation. -- source link
