thesecretmichan: breathegeek: steadymobbing: #you can ACTUALLY SEE THE EQUATION IN HIS EYES #in that tiny little second he’s quantified every variable #worked out the most risky plan but also the plan that is most likely to have the best outcome of them all #and already moved onto ‘how to i put this into motion’ #it’s like people don’t actually understand that the whole ‘do you like being the only genius-level repeat offender in the midwest’ #WAS NOT ACTUALLY HYPERBOLE #jim kirk IS A GENIUS but because it doesn’t come across in the same way as it does with spock #he behaves the way society has taught us that geniuses behave #jim kirk is a genius but he doesn’t always want you to know that OW, MY LITTLE KIRKY FEELS #I really like that last point #because I feel like it’s a deception that fits nuKirk really well #Jim (as I keep saying) has this trickster streak in him #forged out of his natural intelligence and his absorbed knowledge and his Starfleet training and the myriad difficult situations he has t… #has to safely find a way out of on the Enterprise #and this Kirk’s different upbringing has had an interesting effect #he is underestimated and looked down on so often he turned that into one of his survival strategies #it’s why when Pike found him out and said he knew who Jim was and how damn smart he was Jim looks a little like a guy who’s been caught r… #red-handed#and he makes feeble efforts at playing dumb to try to dissuade Pike but Pike isn’t having it and he has to drop the pretence for once #and just be the real frustrated fed-up restless directionless burned-out Jim Kirk he actually is #and then he STILL plays dumb thorugh the academy and with Bones and the Kobiyashi Maru #and it’s not until that first life-or-deat moment when he hears the phrase ‘lightning storm in space’ that he shows his smarts in earnest #but it’s difficult by then because he’s so good at his douchebag-Jim act that even Pike doubts him at first #and the crew continue to think he’s the same as the front he kept putting up for a long time and they don’t take him seriously #and maybe Jim even found it difficult to take -himself- seriously #but then shit gets serious all on its own and he KNOWS he’s right and he knows the risk and the gamble #and he pulls a goddamn miracle out of a near-apocalypse #’first best destiny’ isn’t some mystical fated bullshit #this is where all of Jim’s skills are useful #this is where he finally stops self-destructing for want of something -anything- that will satisfy him down to his bone -- source link
