Garter snakes are neat little guys who can be found all over Ontario (and much of North America). They are totally harmless, and spend most of their time basking in the sun and hiding under leaves. When they need to hunt, they favour small prey such as frogs, fish and mice. People get nervous about snakes, but snakes have way more to fear from us. Being ectothermic (aka cold-blooded), snakes need to bask in the sun to gain heat and energy, in order to digest food, reproduce and maintain respiration and circulation. Unfortunately, roads are great sources of heat! Many garter snakes are killed because they decided to bask on a hot road, and motorists didn’t see them (or didn’t care due to the negative public image of snakes). Despite high road mortality, garter snakes are doing well and actually seem to adjust to human modified habitats better than many other reptiles.
