Radiating PerseidsThis photograph of August’s Perseid Meteor Shower was taken on top of the Wasserkuppe Mountain in Central Germany at the peak of the meteor shower in 2015. The structure in the foreground is a Cold War vintage radio station used to watch over the border between East and West Germany. The background is a composite of 7 panoramic frames stacked to show off the Milky Way using a Nikon D7200. The Perseids in front are a composite of 17 frames taken with a Tokina 11-16mm f/2,8 lens with settings 11mm f/2,8 and ISO 6400. The frames were stitched together using the Photomerge function of Lightroom 6 in Adobe Photoshop. By stitching together the Perseid images with the background, the software put the stars on top of each other and avoided star trails despite this being a composite image.I’m a particular fan of how you can clearly see that the Perseids radiate away from a single area of the sky as that area is the part of the sky most directly exposed to the cometary tail debris that causes the meteors. Thanks to Bastian Werner from Wetterfotografie for submitting the image to us.
