Scandinavian PeninsulaAstronauts aboard the International Space Station took this photo of the Scandinavian Peninsula. It’s the largest peninsula in Europe, extending from the Arctic Circle to the Baltic and North Seas. The peninsula has been shaped extensively by Ice Age glaciers, which helped carve many of its fjords and lakes. The photo also captured the Aurora Borealis. Green is the most commonly seen color in auroras and is a result of charged solar particles striking oxygen at an altitude of about 240km (150 miles). If the aurora had been produced higher up, it would appear red due to collisions with nitrogen; lower and it would be blue or purple.Below the northern lights, there is a band of fading sunlight.REPhoto Credit: NASAReferences:bit.ly/1QBWQJNbit.ly/1zVmELq -- source link
