taslishaw: “The Last Salmon Ceremony” The sun setting on the last generation of southern resident killer whales. There is a tradition of some first nations communities along the Columbia River called the first salmon ceremony, where rituals afe performed to celebrate the return of the salmon on their spawning journey. This is my portrayal of the current youngest SRKWs all grown up, particpating in a ritual ceremony with the last chinook salmon … Each whale is painted to match the likeness of each individual. Clockwise from center: J46 “Star” (holding the chinook), L115 “Mystic”, L123 “Lazuli”, J53 “Kiki”, L118 “Jade”, a fictional offspring of J50, J50 “Scarlett”, J51 “Nova”, and L119 “Joy”. The marine birds at the ceremony are pigeon guillemot and rhiocerous auklets, both indicator species and both have seen declines in the Salish Sea. #nofishnoblackfish #srkw #killerwhale #watercolor #orca https://ift.tt/2GFbJy2 -- source link
