mccarthyites:Josephine Cochrane invented the first commercially successful dishwasher out of frustration at broke and chipped fine china. She also wanted to relieve tired housewives from the duty of washing dishes by hand, but most houses didn’t have hot water systems at the time so initially only hotels and restaurants were interested in the idea. She was said to have exclaimed “If nobody else is going to invent a dish-washing machine, I’ll do it myself!”The first model was designed in the shed behind her house in Shelbyville, Illinois. Unlike earlier designs that were made out of wood and used hand-cranked scrubbers, Cochran’s design was the first to use water pressure to clean the dishes. She received a patent for her invention in 1886 and went on to show her invention at the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where she won the highest prize for “best mechanical construction, durability, and adaptation to its line of work.”(Try again, post right this time?) Fun FACT: Her house is for sale! I know this cause I live down the street. Has a stone slab out front and it’s own Pokestop and everything! (I don’t know of it is the ORIGINAL house but I wouldn’t doubt it.) -- source link
