Ripples in the Red Sea.The reflection of Sol’s light off the world’s seas reveals the dynamic currents passing through the waters when viewed from space. This image was taken by the MODIS instrument on NASA’s AQUA satellite, one of a group of about twenty that are revealing our world’s secrets in unprecedented detail. Sadly they are all ageing, and no replacements are in the pipeline, which will blind us to a world of wonder we have only just begun to grasp. I attach a link to a great PBS NOVA documentary on the amazing things these sats are showing us, so you can see for yourselves what we will lose if they aren’t replaced. The long waves parallel to the coast are due to atmospheric gravity waves that make the air rise and sink, inducing rough patches in the sea below. Crests form where it rises, troughs where it falls. These images teach scientists about how the topmost layer of sea water behaves.LozImage credit NASAhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqojtGWIsww -- source link
