upennmanuscripts:Theorica motus… volvelle on Page 3 of LJS 64, a manuscript copy of Illustrations to Georg von Peurbach’s Novae theoricae planetarum. Caption: Theorica motus orbis supremi neccesario super cetero mundi (Theoretical movement of the highest [orbit?] [required?] over the rest of the world). Help with the translation would be most appreciated! (h/t Natalie Naor)Any suggestions as to what exactly this volvelle is illustrating? EDIT: Thanks to conservethis for figuring it out: it’s THE MOON! The transcription in our metadata had an error (expanding the ceto abbreviation in the caption as cetero instead of the correct centro - thanks to Mark Thakkar on Facebook for pointing this out). So the translation reads something like “Theoretical movement of the highest orbiting body [orbis supremi] around the center of the world [centro mundi]” (I’m still not entirely sure what to do with neccesario). This was fun! More tomorrow!Earlier today we posted on LJS 64, now here’s an older post including an animated gif from that book. We’ll be posting other gifs from the book over the course of the week. Enjoy! -- source link
