shakespearenews:This chart compares the words – and lists of dogs – of three characters in North’s 1576 essay “A Brief Discourse of Rebellion and Rebels” with their exact and near echoes in three Shakespearean plays: “Macbeth” (1606), “King Lear” (around 1606), and the very early “Henry VI, Part 3” (around 1590). Computer analysis suggests this verbal relationship stands out from normal usage of the era; it also suggests the odds that these echoes, so thick and so alike in topic, context, and placement, are mere chance are billions to one. If there’s a smoking gun, it may be “trundle tail,” an extremely rare term for a lowly dog found in both North and “Lear.”Source. -- source link
