Young Oak Kim - B Company, 100th Infantry Battalion (Separate), US Army On an evening in February of 1943, when 2nd Lieutenant Young Oak Kim reported to Camp Shelby, the 100th Battalion (Separate) was out in the field on maneuvers. The next morning, a soldier arrived and told him that the Battalion Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Farrant Turner, would be coming at 8:00 am to meet him. As Kim recalled, “The Colonel told me, ‘I don’t think you realize this is a Japanese unit and of course you’re Korean. I know that historically Japanese and Koreans don’t get along so I’ll have you transferred.’” Kim responded, “No, sir. They’re Americans and I’m an American, and we’re going to fight for America.
