For Women’s History Month, we asked Yale students to reflect on their sources of inspiration.Kristina Shia ’19, Jonathan Edwards CollegeWho is your role model/inspiration?My momWhat kind of inspiration/role model has this woman been in your own life?My mom has always been my role model. She’s so passionate about learning and that’s definitely shaped how I view my own education. She taught me not to assume that I was inherently bad at something and that I should enjoy the experience of learning something new. .She came from China to the U.S. for graduate school and has worked in the semiconductor industry since. Despite the language barrier and cultural differences, she’s had a really inspiring career. Through her hard work she made her way from a shy, foreign graduate student to a product engineering manager in a major technology company. While there are definitely huge challenges to being a woman in STEM, my mom serves as a constant reminder that I can overcome these challenges in my own career. Why should others know about this woman’s contribution?I’m planning to go into the computer science industry in the future, and my mom inspires me to work toward my career goals. At the same time, she is living proof that it’s possible to have a rewarding career and be a fantastic mom. And I’m so excited to see her over spring break! -- source link
