minervacasterly:It’s a girl! An Unlikely Queen is born!On the 7th of September 1533, England welcomed a new Princess. She was name Elizabeth after both her grandmothers, Elizabeth of York and Elizabeth Boleyn nee Howard.Princess Elizabeth was born at Greenwich, Palace of Placentia. She was the only surviving child of Henry VIII and his second consort, Anne Boleyn, and the last of the Tudor dynasty to rule over England and Ireland.Elizabeth’s early years were idyllic, she was her father’s jewel and to many, the Tudor rose. But all that changed when her mother was accused of treason, adultery and many other things. Despite having her marriage annulled, the adultery charges were carried on and she and the other five men accused of being her lovers were sentenced to death.Anne’s labor had been relatively easy but now that she was about to leave her daughter motherless, she made arrangements asking her chaplain, Matthew Parker to look after, after she died.Anne was executed days later, on the 19th of May 1536. Elizabeth wasn’t quite three years old. Although the two would grow up to be enemies later in life, in the beginning, Bess’ biggest advocate was her sister, the lady Mary. With the two now on the same boat, Mary asked her father to send clothes to her, so she wouldn’t have to go through with what she went when Mary outgrew her own clothes. After Mary was restored to favor, she used some of her income to help her sister and eventually, succeeded in convincing her father to allow Elizabeth to return to court. While Elizabeth had vague memories of her mother, she surrounded herself with her maternal relatives, primarily Mary Boleyn’s descendants, who would have known her through their mother.Matthew Parker fulfilled Anne’s promise by working closely with Elizabeth when she became Queen, becoming her archbishop of Canterbury. A position he initially refused but reluctantly accepted after Bess told him she trusted no one other than him and likely, Matthew Parker, remembered his promise to her mother which made him say ‘yes’ in the end.Like her mother, Elizabeth was flirtatious, engaging in courtly love, surrounding herself by men and women who’d endlessly compliment her. Elizabeth was also a fan of French couture, and kept up to date with the latest fashions, becoming a trend-setter herself.Posh, poised, and preferring a middle ground over religious extremes, she became a force de tour, and while she never dared to legitimize her parents’ unions (as that would open a whole can of worms), she did honor it during her coronation pageants and in other celebration where Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn’s letters were seen intertwined, as well as their symbols, with Anne’s crest of the falcon crowned being very visible.Read more here: https://tudorsandotherhistories.wordpress.com/2015/09/07/its-a-girl-gloriana-is-born/ -- source link
